At the end of 2010 I created The Q Center Concert Series in an effort to showcase LGBT musicians, dancers, comedians, actors, filmmakers and performance artists from around the world and locally at Portland’s LGBT community center. I am pleased to report that, due to the mega success of this 1st year of the program, we will be back in 2012 for another round!

This year so far I have featured Matt Alber, John Cameron Mitchell (Rabbit Hole, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, Shortbus), Taylor Mac, Tom Goss, Amber Martin, Shannon Grady, Sook-Yin Lee (Hedwig & The Angry Inch), Paul Dawson & PJ Deboy (Shortbus), Jenna Riot, Kaia Wilson (Team Dresch), Adventures! with Might, Leviticus Appleton, DJ Beyondadoubt, DJ Lunchlady, Swagger, Rose City Sirens, Drag Mansion, DJ Bruce LaBruiser, ChiChi & Chonga, Fannie Mae Darling, Belinda Carroll, Hugo Orozco (Rock & Roll Camp for Girls) and many more. Thank you to everyone who performed, attended or helped me pull these shows and events off! Without all of you none of this would have been possible.

Hey kids! “Hip to be Q” is Q Center‘s theme for Pride weekend this year, with the all-ages kick-off party on Friday, June 17th being the 2nd in the Q Center Concert Series I’ve developed for the organization. As the overall theme, “Hip to be Q” is a throw-back to the very 1st pride parade in 1970 on Christopher Street in NYC. We are going vintage this year, bringing it all back to the roots of our mission as queer people.

The 1st show of the Q Center concert series (an acoustic extravaganza with Matt Alber, Tom Goss & Shannon Grady) was a huge success and this one is sure to be even bigger. Tickets went on sale yesterday and are available on the Q Center website. With this 2nd show I wanted to feature a variety of electronic, pop and dance acts from the queer and allied community. I figured since we wanted to have a pride kick-off party as well, combining the two events made sense. So…what we have is one giant mini-festival of emerging talent and acts. Some national, some local…ALL incredible.

Headlining “Hip to be Q” on Friday, June 17th are the following:

So…as you all know I am taking a break from playing shows myself but have created a concert series for Q Center (featuring all sorts of queer artists) which started this past week. The 1st installment featured Matt Alber, Tom Goss & Shannon Grady. Portland newsweekly Just Out profiled the show HERE. Calling all Producers, Bands, DJs & Gearheads: Indie Electro site Dancefloor Mayhem is hosting a remix contest this month for two of the songs off my new record, “I Killed Tomorrow Yesterday“! The tracks are “Velocity” and “Quickly As We Pass“. They are also the 1st two singles (and videos we’re in the process of making) from this newbie that was just released digitally as a benefit for Q Center on August 31st, 2010.

Last night everyone who came through the door at Red Cap Garage did their part to help keep the doors to the Portland Q Center open while they had their drinks and danced the night away. The lovely folks at Red Cap do a recurring event called “Red Cap Cares” where a charity of their choice gets 100% of the proceeds from the door. Last night the charity was my fundraiser for the Q Center and I honestly couldn’t feel more appreciative if I tried. It’s so nice to know that “Red Cap Cares” isn’t just a slogan to get people in the door. They actually really DO care.

Thanks so much, guys! I’ve said it elsewhere and I’ll say it again here: What you do for the community is really something. I’m really touched and Love Love LOVE Red Cap Garage.

So: Everybody go there, eat a burger, have some drinks…and know that you’re supporting a business that, in turn, is actually working to make a difference for good in the city around you.

Well it has been really amazing getting to work with The Gentry this past year. I’ve been able to realize some loud rock dreams with those guys in tow and I’m really grateful for the time they spent working to prepare for our tour together this Summer and all the time spent traveling around the U.S. with me in a van. We had some really magical moments on and off stage. I was finally able to move past some fairly long-standing stage fright and found freedom in the band format, having just been a singing DJ up to that point. I have Gino, Steve & AC to thanks for that.

We have had our share of disasters along the way as well…much of which revolved around our drummer’s body slowly breaking bone by bone. Dude broke his hand in San Francisco (and just kept playing) then he broke his foot 4 days before the big farewell show at Mississippi Studios in Portland and had surgery on his foot (metal plate anyone?) THE DAY BEFORE. He’s an animal.

At any rate, we made some last minute adjustments to the show obviously because he couldn’t play the entire hour long set. One such change was a bit of a throwback to my humble singing DJ beginnings from years back. It was fun to play some of the new stuff and have it just be pop. If my lighting guy had remembered to bring his board to go along with the lights we lugged to the venue it would have been a lot better…or maybe not. It ended up being very intimate, very bare bones, unmasked & vulnerable. It seemed like a very appropriate way to leave things. Here’s a clip from the karaoke portion of last week’s final show:

Next up is a clip from our secret show at this year’s Salem Pride Festival. It ended up being one of the best shows of the entire Summer. Sadly, the camera was right in front of Gino’s guitar amp so the sound of this video is way more fucked up than it usually is but it was such a good day I figured I’d post it anyway.

The dear, sweet, beautiful boys at Red Cap Garage in Portland have offered to donate 100% of the door proceeds from this coming Saturday night’s cover to my fundraiser for the Portland Q Center! Cool, huh? I love it when local gay establishments actually give back to the community. Red Cap Garage & Boxxes make a habit of it. It makes me feel good about giving them my money.

Well, that was fun. The Gentry boys and I just got home from a wild weekend in Salem, Oregon where we played TWO shows in less than 24 hours for 2010 Capitol City Pride! First we played their official opening party at Flipside Nightclub on Friday (August 6th) and ended up dancing the night away and filming scenes for my upcoming “Bleed Him Out” music video with me undoing my shirt and making sex face in the stripper cage. It was epic. For those of you who made it out, thanks! It was nice to see you.

The next morning I was finally able to announce that we were going to be the surprise performers at the Capitol City Pride Festival in Cascade Gateway Park later that afternoon (having kept it a secret since MAY when I was booked!) We got there and it was bustling with partying queers and their friends. We set up our electronics in the middle of the park and had one of the best shows of our whole Summer tour! As it turns out, I love secrets!!!

Thanks so much to everybody who took such great care of us this weekend and to all of you who came out to the shows! We filmed both of them so I’ll be posting clips sometime soon. Hey everybody. As I near the 10 year anniversary of my debut record, “GLEE” (which was originally released in October of 2000) I’ve been thinking a lot about all the years from there to here. I have come to some conclusions not only about the journey I’ve been on since then musically and in my personal life, but also the journey I intend to be on moving forward with both.

A few seriously mismanaged, mind-blowing venue/booking-related disasters aside, this was a really good night. Maybe my favorite group of wild dancing people from the whole tour so far and DEFINITELY my favorite bands to share the stage with; both The Gentry and The Hugs owned that room! There are a couple of angles I could work with this story but I have chosen to completely omit the really dumb, soul-crushing part about the dickholes running promotions at Rockit Room and only tell you about the wonderful part…for now.

(Insert evil laughter here.)

So with that being said, the story goes like this: I love you, San Francisco. Special thanks to Andrew Rodriguez who had read on Facebook earlier that week that my computer had died and proceeded to come up to me at the merch booth after dancing in the front row the whole night at our show and gave me a computer bag with a Mac Powerbook and all sorts of goodies inside. Like…out of the kindness of his heart!!! Can you believe that? He seriously deserves some sort of award. Also, serious props to Alex Jon Earl for being the most dedicated fanboy in the entire universe, following us all over the place this Summer, from Washington to California!!! I’m really glad I got the chance to meet you guys in person this Summer. Thanks for being prime examples of why I got into this whole musical mess in the first place.
