Pacific NW Rockers Pay Tribute to Portland’s Historic Crystal Ballroom

The Crystal Ballroom - Portland Oregon - (2013) copy

(Originally Published on The Huffington Post on 1/2/2014, HuffPost Entertainment Section)

Portland’s Crystal Ballroom — an iconic, historic entertainment landmark for the city since 1914 — is celebrating its centennial birthday on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014.

To ring in the anniversary, McMenamins Crystal Ballroom has amassed an epic, 100-night celebration, appropriately called “100 Nights!” The party has been going strong since this past October and keeps churning out banger shows nightly until the 21st, with a special performance by Colin Meloy of The Decemberists.

Any band who has ever played the Crystal Ballroom, any person who has every been to a show in that special place, holds some piece of this rich, 100-year history as their own — myself included.

This past week I caught up with Carrie Brownstein (Sleater-Kinney, IFC’s Portlandia), Courtney Taylor-Taylor (The Dandy Warhols), Calvin Johnson (K Records Founder) and Jimi Biron (Music Director, Crystal Ballroom) to chat about the 100 nights of shows, what this birthday means for the NW music scene, and some of the more memorable moments from the ongoing Rock and Roll spectacle that is Portland’s Crystal Ballroom.

READ THE "OREGON MUSIC NEWS" INTERVIEW WITH LOGAN LYNN HERE! STORY RUNS ON THEIR HOMEPAGE THIS SUNDAY!

Logan Lynn (2009)

I was interviewed by “Oregon Music News” last week and the story went live today. To check it out, CLICK HERE or you can read the full transcript below. The story will also be running on the homepage of the “Oregon Music News” website this Sunday, so…YAY. Thanks, OMN! I love it when magazines print my words as I say them instead of picking and choosing little snippets and making me sound stupid.

Here’s the transcript, folks:

From “Oregon Music News” (11/19/2009)

“Logan Lynn makes emotronic, electropop. A gay man from America’s heartland, raised in a family of cult-like, born-again Christians, he’s found a way out of some dark, lost days. Influenced by folk music growing up and DJs in Chicago, Logan’s demo was titled This Is Folk Techno. Sentimental lyrics paired with capricious electro-beats, Logan’s sound ranges from dejected to dancey, creating moods that resemble The Postal Service. Relishing in Portland’s creativity, Logan is signed to The Dandy Warhols’ label Beat The World and is becoming a people person. He celebrates his new album From Pillar To Post with a listening party on Sunday, November 22nd at Jinx Bar with The Dandy’s Zia McCabe spinning records as DJ Rescue, but before the drinks, Logan chats about being emo, hiding under the sheets, and grandma’s adages.”

OMN: Are you emo? What’s wrong with that word? Or is it just right?

LL: Well, that depends. Read the rest of this entry »

LOGAN LYNN'S "THE LAST HIGH" MUSIC VIDEO IS A WRAP! THANKS TO BYSTANDER PRODUCTIONS AND THE "100,000" EXTRAS WHO CAME OUT FOR THE 20 HOUR SHOOT THIS WEEKEND!!!

Bystander Productions presents Logan Lynn: "The Last High" Directed by Rebecca Micciche (2009)

As you probably know, I am about to release my cover of The Dandy Warhols’ song “The Last High”. We shot a video for the new single this weekend with the folks at “Bystander Productions” (who were also responsible for my “Feed Me To The Wolves” video in 2007) and it was quite the production. Director Rebecca Micciche had a very clear vision of what she wanted and executed it over the 20 hour shoot on Saturday. It was a LONG day for everybody involved, but the film turned out INCREDIBLE in the end.

Thanks so much to everybody on the cast and crew…obviously Rebecca Micciche, Jesse Cooke, Brad Reeb, Brian Mohr, Cassie Daugherty, Mike, Jess, Shola, Uwe, Jeremy, Lotti, Yosh, Hayden, Monica, Maija, Kassandra, Lyndsay, Nikki, Dani, Andrew, Nick, Lacie, Quan, Ross, Erika, and Kayla…there were bazillions of extras this time and I spent the entire day in bed with each of them, one after the other. What can I say? I get around. ha ha ha Each and every one of you was great and we got what we had planned and more for the scenes. I’m REALLY looking forward to seeing the finished product and then sharing it with all of you! It’s gonna be SO cool when it’s done in post-production.

For more information on “Bystander Productions”, CLICK HERE.

“The Last High” audio will be coming at your ears in the next few weeks, followed by the video in December at some point, so stay tuned! I’ll announce specifics and post more stills as we get closer to release time. Thanks again to those of you who showed up, whether it was to work the set or roll around in bed with me. You were ALL incredible.

LOGAN LYNN IN THE STUDIO COVERING "THE DANDY WARHOLS" – "THE LAST HIGH"!!!

The Dandy Warhols (2009)

I’ve been working with Y-Tron on a new record for next year and one of the tracks is a cover of The Dandy Warhols’ song “The Last High”. We’ve decided to go ahead and release it WAY in advance of the Y-Tron/LL EP and will be laying it on your ears at some point in the near future, so stay tuned! Y-Tron did the music and we have come up with a really cool new arrangement of their awesome song.

What was particularly cool about doing this was that I got to run the whole thing by Courtney (Taylor-Taylor) beforehand and he gave me his blessing and let me go into The Dandy Warhols’ studio with one of their engineers to record and mix the thing. I’ve said it before, but he’s RAD and when I was doing a last-minute lyric check with him he said “It’s yours now”, which made me grin ear to ear. I’m also happy to report that, upon hearing the first mix of the song, he still approved. WHEW!

🙂

I met with Bystander Productions tonight about doing a video for the track as well…I’ll keep you guys posted as things develop with this. Jeremy Sherrer and I will be finished mixing this coming week at some point, then it’s off to mastering, then…TO YOU! In the meantime, you can watch the original video that the Warhols made when they first released it HERE.

DANDYS RULE OK.

LOGAN LYNN INTERVIEWED ON THE "AZLTRON" ELECTRONIC MUSIC BLOG TODAY!

From Pillar To Post Artwork by Logan Lynn (2009)

Here’s the transcript from my interview with Azltron’s Aaron Z. Lee:

Logan Lynn is an artist out of Portland, Oregon that has recently been signed to the Dandy Warhol’s “Beat the World” label. His new album “From Pillar to Post” is an emotional journey through sprawling soundscapes of sparkling pop melodies and jagged glitchy beats. As the press release on his web page says; “He Puts the “Disco” back in “Discomfort”.

A: How did your interest in music begin?

L: Well, I grew up in a SUPER conservative religious home…I was LITERALLY the son of a preacher man…so, most music aside from church music was outlawed in our house. My parents had some John Denver tapes as well as the “Footloose” soundtrack mixed in with all of the Contemporary Christian music, which I gravitated toward at a very young age and proceeded to play to death. This is totally fucked, but when I was 10 I started going to Target with my mom and stealing “secular” (aka outlawed) CD’s which I kept in the bottom of a trash can at home to hide from my parents. All of that was very “Footloose” too, now that I think about it. Eventually they found the stash and I got caught stealing, so the jig was up. There was no internet back then, so from there I had to get creative in order to get music. I recall convincing my folks that “Jesus Jones” was a guy’s name and that Tori Amos’s song “God” was a hymn. These sorts of plans always worked until somebody paid attention, then the jig would be up again.

LOGAN LYNN ON WILLAMETTE WEEK'S LOCAL CUT TODAY!!!

Logan Lynn

DING! LOGAN LYNN JOINS THE DANDY’S NEW LABEL!

It’s easy to figure why most music critics—even, especially ‘community’ obsessed northwest writers (our own very much included)—trash the Dandy Warhols. They specialize in infectious, lyrically-available, immediately-explicable pop rendering the critic’s job rather beside the point. They freely admit the quality of drugs and sex partners available to rock stars to be perks of the job. Most damning, they’re a singles band. Had they the good sense to put out a dozen 45s in 1967 and record a series of majestically-condescending interviews to fawning magazines before well-timed overdoses, we’d all be lighting candles (or, likely, other things) upon Taylor-Taylor Street each year.

As is, despite the mountain of press CTT* spends detailing the glories of his hometown to the international press, they are locally considered from Portland but not of Portland. Too careerist (which makes no sense). Too haughty (ever talk up Janet Weiss?). Too attractive (perhaps, but their unending advertisement for NW glam have buffered the ranks). Too…happy? Confident in their powers? Unabashed in their desire to change the town, or, at least, their little quarter, towards a well-articulated vision of…I know, I know, but there’s no other phrase…urban Bohemia? Put simply, they’ve never sought to Keep Portland Weird or indulge a Malkmusian sense of artist-in-residence at riverside village. The mission statement’s been there from the beginning, but, now, the Dandy’s have built their compound, imported allies, and started a label.

Following themselves and next week’s concert openers the Upside Down, Logan Lynn becomes the third artist to be signed to Beat The World Records. A dayglo electro performer, Lynn’s ecstatic intelligence and untempered glee through two EPs and LOGO-rotated videos resembles a sweaty Postal Service capable of inelegant emotions or The Pet Shop Boys were they sorta hot and born to the civil unions generation—”Ring Around,” for an artist whose press protests (wrongly) he “brings the ‘mo back to emo,” tackles proposals absent politics. CTT’s set to produce his debut full-length From Pillar To Post (and, we hope, counsel against Lynn’s cap choices) early next year and, one expects, set dancefloors thumping worldwide.

LOGAN LYNN AND THE UPSIDE DOWN SIGNED TO THE DANDY WARHOLS NEW RECORD LABEL, "BEAT THE WORLD"!!!

Logan Lynn

IT’S OFFICIAL…AND I COULDN’T BE HAPPIER. THINGS IN LABEL LAND ARE STILL UNDER WRAPS FOR A LITTLE BIT, BUT WE ARE ALLOWED TO LEAK THIS MUCH.

🙂

BASICALLY, “BEAT THE WORLD” RECORDS IS THE SHIT. THE DANDYS ARE THE SHIT. THE UPSIDE DOWN ARE THE SHIT. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE ARE IN FUCKING INCREDIBLE COMPANY.

THIS IS HOW THE PRESS RELEASE READ TODAY…

December 6, 2007 (New York, NY) – Remember watching the movie ‘Dig’ and being shocked by how crappy life on a major label was for the Dandy Warhols? Well things have changed. As of this year Courtney Taylor-Taylor and the Dandy Warhols have created their very own record label: Beat TheWorld, which is just what they intend to do. Accompanying them is a carefully chosen, elite team of new world soldiers: The Upside Down, The Dandies themselves and of course, our very own secretary-general of emotronic dismay Logan Lynn, ‘the man who put the disco back into discomfort.’

Logan’s EP, ‘Feed Me To The Wolves’ was released in October with the video of the same name enjoying airplay on LOGO’s ‘New Now Next’. Logan is currently putting the finishing touches on his debut L.P. ‘From Pillar To Post,’ due out on Beat The World in Spring 2008. The forthcoming debut, featuring production by Carlos Cortes, promises to be yet another wry, compulsively danceable, occasionally tear-jerking affair. Don’t miss the buzz.
