Logan Lynn’s resume reads like a true Renaissance Man: writer, producer, television personality and activist. Most importantly he is also a survivor of substance abuse and is “staying grateful” to continue contributing to society constructively, while continuing to evolve from his electro-pop and dance foundation musically. He has released seven studio albums, fifteen music videos, four singles, three compilation records, five EP’s and one mixtape since 1998. Videos of Lynn’s singles have been featured on Logo, MTV, VH1 and Spike TV.
With his eighth album Adieu being released in the coming weeks, Logan Lynn is premiering the hard rocking track “The One” that pays tribute to old Portland friends The Dandy Warhols and their landmark Stones’ riff hit ”Bohemian Like You.” Lynn has always had a knack for making danceable rock and pop and with “The One,” he shows that he can now confidently rock out with the same gusto. To kick off the New Year, Glide chatted with Lynn about the new album, his new sound and his many contributions to his musical and creative environments.
Your eighth album Adieu is due for release this year and with it comes a new sound. Can you please share with us what the new sound might be?
Well, I am known historically for being largely electropop or dance. My first record GLEE came out 15 years ago and was very much all about me and my Casio SK-1 being super lo-fi and glitchy…it was anti-pop. DJ, musician, writer, producer, TV presenter, activist, not to mention slaying a few demons along the way, Logan Lynn has packed a lot into his 36 years, and you can add to that releasing the very first single of 2016, as new track ‘The One’ became available at 00:00 on January 1st. Stylistically ‘The One’ sees a slight shift in direction for Lynn, whose past releases have been more electronic, whether it’s veering towards the dance floor or creating hook-filled alt-pop. This first track from his forthcoming new album ‘Adieu’ sees him (aided by producer Gino Mari) tackling garage inspired indie-rock without losing those catchy melodies and pop sparkle. In part a homage to his mentors The Dandy Warhols who have released his past work on their label, ‘The One’ is a fresh sounding hybrid of organic and synthetic instrumentation that stands out as one of the strongest songs he’s written thus far.
We asked Logan Lynn a few questions about the new album, his life and his music.
TSOC: You’ve covered a lot of musical styles in your career, including a dance music, electronic indie and pop, and your new single could be described as modern garage rock. Has this been a natural progression or a deliberate decision to try different genres?
Lynn: I think this has been a product of my having been so deeply influenced by artists in all different genres. New year, new… music? That’s the direction Logan Lynn is taking—the out singer just launched the music video for his new single, “the One,” on New Year’s Eve and its already getting praise.
“I know it’s super old-fashioned sounding, but I do really like the idea that there might be such a thing as ’the One’ when it comes to love,” says Lynn, who used to host NewNowNext Music. “Those types of romantic narratives have totally f*cked me up from time to time, though.”
That’s largely what his new record, Adieu, is about, he says—the ending of a relationship, but also the end of going after the wrong guys. “Men who eventually end up with these types of songs written about them,” adds Lynn. “It’s a thing.”
