Nothing’s Ever Wrong turns 7 today

7 years ago tonight Jay and I released the last short film we ever made together, Nothing’s Ever Wrong. It was the first time I had directed him, and the song was just me singing live vocals with a piano for the first time in my career. (Not my idea)

The album and film were meant to be a commentary on fame, exposure, addiction, and the isolation we had both been experiencing for years. What happened next was a media circus that stretched across mainstream and LGBTQ+ outlets, focused entirely on the apparently scandalous nudity in the video, followed by our personal lives. It made me feel simultaneously invisible and overexposed, which was honestly the entire point of that record and its accompanying films. It was bonkers.

The My Movie Star rollout ended up being an exact mirror to what I had been going through in Hollywood at the time, and it played out in the weirdest, grossest ways. Could not have proven the point any better myself had I tried — and I was definitely trying!

Anyway, I think most of the choices I made during that era were wrong, both creatively and personally, and I would never make them now — but I did back then, and everyone got to watch! I do feel proud of the big swings, even when they miss…and this one ended up on MUBI and the soundtrack to multiple television shows after the fact, so all’s well that ends well, I suppose.

Careful what you wish for, friends!
