Got together with this dude two years ago tonight and honestly never looked back. I had never met anybody like Casey at the time, and still haven’t. He’s is one of one — a true original — and I love him very much. Always will.

We met while I was crying in the potato field, started working together on my last record, moved in fast, traveled all over the country, adopted a puppy, got engaged, relocated to a city he had never even visited before, settled into a new life here, called off the engagement around Christmas, and have been building something new together that works for this chosen family of ours ever since.

I have no idea what the future will hold, but I do know that I am still so happy that we met, and am forever changed by the experience (in a good way!)

No matter what challenging thing happens in a day, I always remind myself that it could be so much worse.

I could be in Idaho.

It has taken me days to accept that my friend Brent is not here anymore and I still can’t really find words for what this sweet man has meant to me and my own recovery over the years.

Beyond holding space as one of the few people I know who look hot with or without a beard — which I will gladly admit was what I noticed about him first and is VERY RARE — this handsome guy made space for me in Oregon’s recovery community when no one else would. He saw value in my journey from there to here, and he made sure other people knew it. He showed me respect in rooms I had been disrespected in and fought for me, and others like me who had carved their own path to recovery, to have a space at the big table. And it worked.
