Jay Mohr & Logan Lynn On “My Movie Star,” Portland and More

If you are a fan of comedian Jay Mohr’s podcast Mohr Stories, then you ought to be very aware of Portland, Oregon-based musician Logan Lynn. If not a Mohrrior, then you may know Logan Lynn from his prolific solo career — he had landed a record deal via The Dandy Warhols — or as the founder of the Keep Oregon Well campaign. Although Mohr is primarily known for being funny, he has an ear for music and decided to showcase that as a producer for Lynn on My Movie Star.

Uncharacteristic of the times, My Movie Star is not just an album. Rather, it is a multi-media double album paired with a Mohr-produced film, as done in partnership with Lynn and filmmaker Kevin Forrest of Portland Film Works. The musical release was done in collaboration with T-Pain muse GLASYS — who T-Pain is rumored to have discovered via Reddit — and features a mix of Lynn originals, remixes and covers. GLASYS and Mohr aside, musical guests on My Movie Star include the aforementioned Dandy Warhols, Jarryd James, Rian Lewis, and Tiffany. Yes, that Tiffany.

I had the pleasure of doing Q&A with both Mohr — who recently appeared on the Fox hit The Mick — and Lynn, and the results were very entertaining. More on Lynn can be found at www.loganlynnmusic.com, while Mohr can be visited online at www.jaymohr.com.

Thanks for chatting with us about the upcoming release of My Movie Star. How did this record come about?

Logan Lynn: Well, this year marks 20 years since my first album was released and I have been in a process of getting down to the essence of what I’m actually trying to do, in life and in music, ever since. When Jay and I met, I had just finished making my last album, Adieu, and was getting ready to release it. He was one of the first people to ever hear those songs and gave me the most thoughtful, tender, honest feedback. He also wrote one of the first reviews for that record and I think the seed was planted there. I remember feeling like someone had finally really seen and heard me and what I was doing with my songs…or, at least, was trying to do.

Jay Mohr: Tough question for me personally, as I can’t speak for Logan’s motivation or mindset. However, while listening to Adieu, during the song “Break Me Down,” the line “Love me and I’ll kill it with you in time” hit me between the eyes. I thought, “There! There’s the real guy!” I felt like Read the rest of this entry »

Watch ‘My Movie Star’ from Portland’s Logan Lynn

Premiering today on Northwest Music Scene is a brilliant three-song short film titled “My Movie Star” by prolific Portland musician Logan Lynn.

The twelve and half minute film includes three new previously unreleased songs from Lynn’s forthcoming album, My Movie Star. The clip features the ivory soaked tunes “Big City Now”, “Like Before” and the title track, “My Movie Star,” and is sure to have Logan Lynn fans drooling as they wait for the release to drop. The film and the album were produced by Jay Mohr (Saturday Night Live, “Jerry Maguire”, FOX’s “The Mick”) along with Lynn, in partnership with filmmaker Kevin Forrest of Portland Film Works, and is a taste of what’s to come when the album is released.

Mohr and Lynn joined forces with piano god and T-Pain muse GLASYS to create the multi-media double album, accompanying remixes and covers record, and the featurette by the same name. The record also features collaborations with 80’s pop icon Tiffany (“I Think We’re Alone Now”), Jarryd James, Rian Lewis, The Dandy Warhols and more, and is due out later this year.

Said Lynn about his connection to Mohr, Read the rest of this entry »

Logan Lynn’s ‘ADIEU’ Named “Vinyl of the Week” and Reviewed by Forestpunk This Week

Logan Lynn OH LUCIFER Video Still (2017)

My new record ADIEU is “Vinyl of the Week” over at Forestpunk this week! Check out their killer review HERE, or keep reading below.

From Forestpunk: (1/28/2017)

Vinyl Of The Week: Logan Lynn – Adieu Review
A synthy Indie Pop “jazz hands mental crisis” from Portland‘s Logan Lynn on Adieu, Lynn’s eighth LP.

Both the record sleeve and the LP decals for Adieu feature a super cute crimson Pomeranian against a striking, cheery chartreuse backdrop. A closer examination reveals the pet being fed with blood from a slit wrist. It’s an apt entry point for Logan Lynn’s jaunty, musical theater-informed song cycle on breakups, mental health, suicidal thoughts, and recovery. Self help never sounded so fun!

Taken at the surface level, Adieu would simply be another peppy, upbeat synthpop record – albeit a very good one – with sharp, tight arrangements and eloquent lyrics. Diving into the lyric sheet (thoughtfully included with the 2xLP) cracks the shiny veneer, revealing an unexpected darkness, as Lynn peels off his skin, to share his shredded nerves and modern-day anxieties, delving into the seamy, sleazy side of life, while sounding like a Threepenny Opera.

Lynn and longtime collaborator Gino Mari broke the mold on Lynn’s traditional methodology, with Lynn writing all the vocals and lyrics acapella, then bringing them into the studio for further embellishment, both synthetic and organic. Classic piano pop – a la Ben FoldsHarry NilssonRandy Newman – meet lo-fi synths and canned beats, as heard on album opener double header “I Like It All The Time” followed by “Go There Where You Want To Be Loved” – the catchiest, most tuneful take on abandonment you’re likely to hear this month.

The melodicism and catchy arrangements – like the toppling piano chords and pots-and-pans percussion of “Go There” – are a perfect microcosm of what makes this album so exceptional, so unique, so palatable. Lynn laces the abyss with a wheelbarrow full of sugary Indie Pop. Read the rest of this entry »
